Residents of Port Harcourt are reeling in shock after a young woman was viciously stabbed by her ex-boyfriend in broad daylight, an incident that has reignited conversations about the safety of women in the city and across Nigeria. According to eyewitness accounts, the attack took place around midday near a crowded market area in the heart of Port Harcourt.

The victim, whose name has been withheld for her safety, was reportedly on her way to run errands when she was suddenly accosted by her former partner.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the assailant, allegedly enraged by a recent breakup, pulled out a sharp object and began stabbing the woman repeatedly.

Bystanders screamed for help as the assailant fled the scene, blending into the crowd before authorities could arrive.

“It was like something out of a nightmare. He was just stabbing her, and people were running everywhere, trying to help. No one expected something like this to happen in the middle of the day,” said a market trader who saw the incident.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital

Emergency services responded swiftly to the distress calls. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors worked tirelessly to stabilize her condition.

Medical sources confirmed that she suffered multiple stab wounds but is now in stable condition, though her recovery is expected to take several weeks.

A hospital official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated:

“We are doing everything possible to ensure she recovers fully. The physical wounds will heal, but the emotional trauma is something that will take time.”

The Rivers State Police Command has launched a full-scale manhunt for the suspect, who remains at large. Police spokesperson, DSP Grace Iringe-Koko, assured the public that every effort is being made to apprehend the perpetrator.

“We are using all available resources to track down the suspect. Violence against women is a serious crime, and we will not rest until justice is served,” DSP Iringe-Koko emphasized.

The attack has sparked outrage among residents, with many calling for stricter enforcement of laws protecting women and harsher penalties for perpetrators of gender-based violence.

Women’s rights groups have organized a peaceful protest, urging the government to take decisive action.

A local activist, Mrs. Amina Bello, told our reporters:

“This is not just an isolated incident. Women in Nigeria face violence every day, and we need stronger laws and better protection. Enough is enough!”

“The true measure of any society is how it treats its most vulnerable. Let us stand together to protect our women and ensure that such acts of violence never go unpunished.”
