Ile-Ife, Osun State — A 35-year-old man, Ayodele Solomon, was on Monday ordered to be remanded at the Ile-Ife Correctional Centre by a Magistrate Court. He stands accused of defiling an 11-year-old girl in a case that has sent shockwaves through the local community.
According to the police prosecutor, Inspector Sunday Osanyintuyi, the incident occurred on June 13, 2024, in the Agbadagbudu area of Kosere, Ile-Ife, Osun State.
Inspector Osanyintuyi told the court that Solomon allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of the young girl, a crime that is considered deeply repugnant and punishable under Nigerian law.
“The defendant is facing a two-count charge of rape and breach of peace,” the prosecutor announced in court. “He is accused of violating Sections 218 and 249(d) of the Criminal Code Laws of Osun State, 2002.”
Court Proceedings and Defendant’s Plea

Ayodele Solomon appeared in court without legal representation. When the charges were read, he pleaded not guilty to both counts. The court, presided over by Magistrate Abosede Sarumi, listened attentively to the prosecution’s submission before making its ruling.
Magistrate Sarumi ordered that the defendant be kept in custody at the Ile-Ife Correctional Centre until the next court date. “The case is adjourned till July 28 for mention,” the magistrate ruled.
News of the alleged crime has sparked outrage among residents of Ile-Ife. Community leaders and child rights advocates have condemned the act, calling for the full weight of the law to be brought against the accused.
Mrs. Adebisi Ojo, a local schoolteacher and child welfare activist, expressed her dismay:
“It is heartbreaking to hear that a child as young as 11 could be subjected to such trauma. We must all work together to protect our children and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.”
Traditional rulers in the area have also weighed in, urging parents to be more vigilant and to educate their children on personal safety.
Community policing groups are being encouraged to step up surveillance in neighborhoods, especially in areas where children are most vulnerable.
Under Section 218 of the Osun State Criminal Code, rape or defilement of a minor is a felony punishable by life imprisonment. Section 249(d) addresses acts that could cause a breach of public peace, which is often invoked in cases where the crime has caused public outcry or unrest.
Legal experts note that the swift remand of the accused reflects the seriousness with which the judiciary is treating cases of child sexual abuse.
The move is expected to deter potential offenders and reassure the public of the justice system’s commitment to protecting vulnerable members of society.
Support for the Victim

Child protection agencies and non-governmental organizations in Osun State have offered counseling and support to the young victim and her family. Medical professionals have also been mobilized to ensure that the girl receives the necessary care and attention.
Next Steps
The defendant remains in custody at the Ile-Ife Correctional Centre.
The case will be mentioned again on July 28.
