In a jaw-dropping operation, security operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) have apprehended a former footballer, a grandmother, and three other suspects for their alleged involvement in the smuggling of a whopping 22.6kg of cocaine. The dramatic bust, which has gripped the attention of the nation, is being hailed as one of the biggest drug interceptions at the airport in recent months.

According to Aviation Security (AVSEC) officials, the suspects were intercepted during a routine security check at the international terminal of the airport.

The ex-footballer, whose identity is being withheld due to ongoing investigations, was said to be traveling with a group that included a grandmother in her late 60s—an unusual suspect, which has left many in disbelief.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported heightened tension as officers discovered the illicit substance cleverly concealed in the luggage of the suspects.

“It was a scene straight out of a movie,” said one passenger who requested anonymity. “The officers were thorough, and before you knew it, the suspects were being led away.”

Sources close to the investigation revealed that the 22.6kg of cocaine had been packed in multiple compartments within the luggage, making detection difficult.

However, state-of-the-art scanning equipment and the vigilance of trained security personnel ensured the contraband was uncovered.

The grandmother, described as “a quiet, unassuming woman,” reportedly claimed ignorance of the contents of her bag, insisting she was only assisting a friend.

The ex-footballer, once a household name in local leagues, is said to have cooperated with authorities but denied any knowledge of the drugs.

A top official from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) addressed the press, stating:

“This arrest is a clear signal to all would-be smugglers: our security apparatus is robust, and we will not allow anyone to turn our airports into a hub for illicit activities. The law will take its full course.”

The official also commended the collaboration between AVSEC, NDLEA, and other security agencies for their swift action and professionalism.

“The audacity of smuggling drugs with a grandmother in tow is both shocking and saddening. It shows the lengths to which traffickers will go, but it also highlights the effectiveness of our security systems. We are determined to keep our airports safe for all Nigerians.”

The arrest has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many Nigerians expressing shock and disappointment at the involvement of a former footballer and a grandmother in such a crime. As the investigation continues, authorities have assured the public that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring justice is served.
