After the construction of Carter Bridge and Èkó Bridge, Lagos kept experiencing rapid urban growth. The bridges were under increasing pressure from rising traffic. Congestion became a growing challenge, affecting commuters, businesses, and the movement of goods. Therefore, the need for another route is needed. In 1976, under the leadership of General Olusegun Obasanjo, a contract was awarded for a third bridge across the Lagos Lagoon. Construction began, launching an ambitious project called the THIRD MAINLAND BRIDGE.
